● About Us
Our story
Second Sacks was started to put food directly into the hands of hungry children. With 86% of students in Lufkin ISD identified as economically disadvantaged and eligible to receive free or reduced-price school meals, volunteers sought to ensure food-insecure students have food to eat on the weekends.
Research shows that children who are well-fed do better in school, and through education, will hopefully be able to break the cycle of poverty.
● About us
program
Our program began with Herty Primary in 2019. We added a second school, Garrett Primary, in 2023, and a third school, Trout Primary, in 2024.
The program was expanded in August 2025 when we began providing weekend food sacks to hungry students on all 12 Lufkin ISD school campuses.
School counselors, Communities in Schools representatives, principals, and teachers identify students on each campus who need help with food.
First Baptist Church of Lufkin provides our operations center space with room for inventory, meeting space, and for our volunteers to work.
